Speaking at MISK

In my role as a professor at IE Business School, I had the opportunity and the honour to speak about Deep Learning at Misk Global Forum, the biggest youth event in the middle east, sponsored by the Misk Foundation.

What is Misk Foundation?

Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Foundation (“Misk”), is a non-profit philanthropic foundation established by H.R.H. Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to discover, develop and empower Saudi youth to become active participants in the knowledge economy.

And Misk Global Forum (MGF)?

Established in 2016, the Misk Global Forum brings young leaders, creators and thinkers together with established global innovators to explore, experience and experiment with ways to meet the challenge of change.

You spoke at Misk Global forum about…

As you are probably aware, deep Learning is one of the hot topics in the context of Machine Learning as it has unlocked new powerful and interesting uses cases for analytics. In case you don’t know it:

Deep Learning is a subfield of machine learning concerned with algorithms inspired by the structure and function of the brain called artificial neural networks.

The goal of this deep dive talk was to inspire future generations in the use of deep learning. We had the chance to discuss interesting examples, what is the concept, what does it means deep,… and what is more important to me: I had one of the longest Q&A in my whole life! This is the part that I enjoyed most!

Deep dive about Deep Learning at mgf 2017

I was thrilled  to discover how worldwide youth is eager to create a new and brighter future based technology! And many important opportunities were announced such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation partnership with Misk.

In the context of analytics, we focus our discussion many times on the role of data and algorithms. That means, how to built, implement and scale new innovative solutions to improve decision making: faster, wiser and better! But we must remember the even more important role of people in the identification,  creation and application of such technologies as I’ve discussed in the past. It is not just about technical skills and capabilities (which are relevant), data and algorithms are only as valuable as the decisions they enable.

I will keep an eye on the transformation of Saudi Arabia and the significant role of Misk Foundation as I’m sure that I will be very astonished about what will be accomplished in the following years.
